Description

Reporting to the Global Desktop Platform Management for DELL I/T OPERATIONS, the Wintel System engineer will lead projects and deployments to the global desktop platform and internal applications based on Windows XP Desktop operating systems.


Responsibilities:

The SE will meet with business customers to define and document desktop platform requirements for scalability and disaster recoverability, as well as desired performance characteristics. From there, the SE will translate these requirements into software requirements by working with Desktop Engineering. The SE will be responsible for global deployment of internal software to the desktop platform. Deployment of software should include the understanding of testing and production pushes.

The SE will provide 2ndlevel system support for all implemented desktop systems, coordinate and oversee break-fix tasks by operational staff, and work with3rdparty vendors and senior engineering staff to resolve more complex problem scenarios.

The ideal candidate will be a strong team player and actively participate in a fast-paced and challenging global environment. Candidates must be able to work independently and demonstrate exceptional organizational and time management skills.



Primary responsibilities:

* Deploys software to the desktop platform via SMS (Systems Management Server)
* Guides/ consults customers with the definition of realistic requirements to engineering
- Resource for system escalation issues
- Documents platform standards and processes for ongoing operations
- Investigates and resolves system problems and system performance
- Schedules and coordinates installation and maintenance of software on the network and ensures compatibility of all communications and computer hardware/software

* Participates in team meetings and assists with definition of systems design
* Illustrates technical concepts in business terms
* Enforces global system desktop standards and best practices
* Assures projects adhere to published operations processes
* Prepares desktops for software deployments by ensuring compliance
* Assists with troubleshooting of escalated issues
* Assists senior system engineers to analyze and provide innovative system engineering solutions. Should be proactive as opposed to reactive.



Qualifications
Functional/technical requirements:

* Understands, applies and may adapt fundamental concepts, practices and procedures related to systems engineering.
* Advanced knowledge of common system hardware design configurations that optimize system performance. (desktops only)
* Understands, applies and may adapt fundamental concepts, practices and procedures related to systems administration.
* Advanced knowledge of system performance, hardware, software, and related troubleshooting and quality procedures.
* Possesses a strong working knowledge of Dell's business needs.
* Ability to recommend system upgrades and improvements to achieve Dell's goals and objectives.
* Understands software development concepts and processes.
* Good communication and customer service abilities. (Strong English Speaking and writing skills)
* Understanding of the project lifecycle.
* Expert knowledge of Microsoft desktop OS products (WXP, W2K)
* TCPIP networking , RAVPN and wireless




Qualifications and Experience requirements:

* 5-10 years of professional experience (4 years directly related to I/T or functional area) or equivalent combination of education/experience.
* Microsoft Certified Systems Engineer
* 3 years of SMS (Systems Management Server)
* Complete understanding of the desktop platform (Windows 2000 and Windows XP)
* WMI knowledge
* Scripting knowledge
* Ability to create and document processes
